A heartfelt and often powerful collection; some poems much more memorable than others.

i listened through the audiobook narration twice, once with the book open and once without.

Warsan Shire has a strong, distinct, and commanding voice. i highly recommend listening to her narrate this body of work if you can. teaching my mother how to give birth has a special place in my heart as the first poems i read from her, and think it’s a better place to start before diving into this first full collection of poems.

really chilling & artful book of poetry regarding the life of a family of refugees, with a special focus on one girl. the author has a way of writing that makes you really feel the weight of her words & the subject matter. i also really appreciated the glossary at the end

wow wow wowow. this took me so long to finish, because these poems hit me so hard. i found that i had to read this in a comfortable space, where i felt safe to express myself and (most likely) cry. these poems were so beautiful, delicate in some ways, but heavy. every time i opened this, i found myself thinking of my own trauma and how much i’m hurting. that can be so hard to sit with but i’m grateful. this will be a forever favorite. i can’t wait to own this beautiful book of poems. it means a lot to me, and i never even thought i would connect with poetry in this way.
