Shire’s poems are heartbreaking. That said, unfamiliarity with Somali culture and Islam will make them harder to decipher. I especially enjoyed Home and Bless the Moon. But there are lots of great poems here.

Gut punch after stunning gut punch

I feel like I will need to go back and really take these apart. However, on the first read through, there is so much sorrow, pain and beauty in these poems. I had to pause a few times as the descriptions of what it's like being a woman hit me like a tonne of bricks.

No one puts their children in a boat, unless the water is safer than the land.

A very deep and detailed dive into the life of a woman, a daughter, a refugee and her close ones.

The poems act more like a diary, a storyline. I found a quite accurate description of the hardships and the intricacies of a woman's life, specially WOC.

Spectacular in its own way.
