this collection was beautiful. exploring womanhood in all its intricacies and complications as well as describing the turmoil of being a refugee and the burden that one must carry was done in such a meticulous way that i was in awe throughout this collection. i’m definitely coming back to annotate this some more but i loved it.

Shire has a way with words that captivates you at the end of every line and beginning of every verse. This collection explores the multifaceted experience of being black, a refugee and a woman and the battles one faces with their own faith and navigating their experiences in a foreign yet not so foreign world. Heartbreakingly emotional and deeply touching, I am glad to have been able to experience this piece of work.

I read the book pretty quickly but it definitely had some gold in it. Some of the poems to me weren’t the best but the author really did tell a story and was able to create pictures.

I like poems that rhyme so this one just wasn't for me :/ There's a few good moments but it didn't really feel artistic. That doesn't take away from the art though, it just feels more like she had all these heavy things on her mind weighing her down that she just had to get out there and maybe she'd feel lighter after. FIVE stars for the art FIVE stars for the title.
