I usually read about one poetry book a year and this one was fantastic. I was interested in this poet as a "collaborator" with Beyonce on Lemonade, but her poetry goes deep. Poems touch on the experiences of being a refugee, sexual assault, and womanhood. A unique voice and a powerful poetry collection.

Thanks to #NetGalley for the eARC.

“Holy Mother of those deemed intimidating, patron saint of the unapproachable, savior of those told to soften their expression.
Our lady of uncomfortable silences, Dame Grace Jones, your daughters
(damn their insomnia) turn in their dreamless sleep, a legion of women flinching at touch.
Fortify them.
Monarch of the last word, darling of the dark, arched brow, we bless you, queen of the cut eye.
We lay our burdens at your feet, careful not to weigh you down,
from you, we are learning
to put ourselves first”

“your girlhood an incubation for madness”

this is the first collection of poetry i’ve read and i really enjoyed this. i read previous poems of her and was gifted this by my english teacher as a grad gift almost two years ago. very moving poems and a lot of important issues written with beauty and significance
challenging emotional reflective sad

beautiful themes of immigrant and refugee experiences, girlhood and womanhood, mother wounds and the deep empathy and understanding only such sorrow can bring

First read through was solid, will definitely have to do a reread focusing in on one poem at a time to Gauge the deeper meaning and hidden messages.
