I found this poetry collection to be beautiful but also heartbreaking and raw in a lot of ways. I’m not very experienced with reading poetry so I do think a lot of it went over my head tbh. Definitely a collection that really takes some time and sinking into to fully understand.

Definitely wish I read the glossary before…
One of my favorites:

BLESS THE MOON
Forgive us, we blamed you
for floods, for the flush of blood,
for men who are also wolves, even
though you could pull the tide in
by her hair, we tell everyone
we walked all over you. We
blame you for the dark, as if you had
a choice, performing just beyond
the glass, distant and adored,
near but alone, cold and unimaginable
following us home. We use you
to see our blue bodies beneath
your damp light, we let you watch,
swollen against the glass as we move
against one another like fish.

I just love Warsan Shire's narrative voice.

Favorite poems: Bless Our CCTV Star, This Not a Love Song and Bless the Blood.

I loved Shire's Time is a Mother collection but this was a bit underwhelming for me. So many poems circles the same ideas with the same imagery that I just felt like the collection would have been great if some of them were combined. There were some really great poems in here but unfortunately they're bracketed by underdeveloped ones. I'd much rather read a shorter collection with strong and thought-out poems.

Thank you to Random House and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader's Copy!

Available March 1st 2022.

Poetry gathers our dead. Through testaments, obituaries and allegories, Warsan Shire invites to sit with our ghosts. Whether honoring the girlhood we lost or in honor of a lost daughter, each poem in this collection is a stirring call to action. To love, to protect and to recognize our daughters as more precious than gold. To bless them, again and again.
