can def see why some people think this couldve worked better as a middle grade story :) but it was still super enjoyable and interesting, elatsoe and jay are such cute friends. a really good debut :)
3.5/5
I really loved the idea of this world and it’s mechanics, but I think the author didn’t spend enough time fleshing certain plot points out. This has the issue of making some of the magical stuff feel thrown out of nowhere for convenience. Some of the middle stuff flew by so fast and I felt it didn’t have enough development. The dialogue was also fairly stilted and I felt like Elatsoe and her best friend kept discovering fairly mundane stuff about each other (siblings, favorite food, etc) which didn’t make sense if they were childhood bffs? I think it was an excuse to say stuff about each character that kind of flopped. But this world is so magical and cool that despite some flaws I still really enjoyed this book!

I loved the Native American focus of the book, but it reads like a very young middle grade, especially during serious scenes. The plot felt rushed at the end and wrapped up too easily.
Very good book - I found the plot interesting, the characters were cool, and the tendency that the book has to break from expected tropes - the biggest I’m thinking of is parents that don’t trust or believe their child, but also the need to make friends fall in love.

How can you not like vampires, a murder mystery, and a ghost dog who belongs to an indigenous teenage heroine? This is a young adult, fantasy, paranormal mystery.
