This was well worth a read and a really interesting blend of paranormal and mystery. I also really liked learning more about Lipan Apache culture through the story, and I loved the ghost dog companion. It did read a bit young for me ultimately, but I’m really glad I picked this up as it’s one I’ve been eyeing up for ages.

Vanessa and I started reading [b:Elatsoe|49089632|Elatsoe (Elatsoe, #1)|Darcie Little Badger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1581002562l/49089632._SX50_.jpg|71388826] for Bedtime Booktime in 2022, having read and loved [b:A Snake Falls to Earth|56036276|A Snake Falls to Earth|Darcie Little Badger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1619881328l/56036276._SY75_.jpg|87278597]. Elatsoe felt emotionally difficult for both of us. As the plot picked up, Vanessa asked that we set it aside. We have a commitment to one another that if something we are reading doesn't feel right to one (or both!) of us, we set it aside.
Grief is a difficult monster. 2022 was a year of grief for us both; Elatsoe brought up feelings, for each of us, that were still raw and smarting. I'm glad we set the book aside when it no longer felt good to read together.
I decided, recently, to pick it up again and finished it just now. I am glad to know how the story played out. [a:Darcie Little Badger|8141191|Darcie Little Badger|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1583586206p2/8141191.jpg] weaves stories together beautifully. I'm not one for monsters. Horror, no matter how "light," really challenges me. (We also struggled through many parts of the first two books in the Winternight trilogy, but are continuing onward.) If we decide it is time for us to stop, we will.
We had the privilege of meeting Darcie Little Badger in August 2022 at a reading in Santa Fe during Indian Market. She's fantastically mysterious!
The 2nd Elatsoe book, [b:Sheine Lende|190854829|Sheine Lende (Elatsoe, #2)|Darcie Little Badger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1695088662l/190854829._SX50_.jpg|193139707], is forthcoming; I plan to read it on my own.
I don't know much about Lipan Apache, beyond what members of other Apache communities have shared. I look forward to Little Badger's further contextualization of her community understandings in her work.
