I had a fantastic time reading this! I thought the characters were fun and well developed, and I thought it dealt with difficult or complex conversations very well. I appreciated that the relationships in this book were all healthy, and it was refreshing to not hate any one character (besides the villain, he sucked).
Main character is 17, but imo this book straddles the ju/ya boundary. It’s definitely something I would’ve read in elementary school and loved. I especially loved the many stories that are told and how they advance the plot and tie everything bc together. The art is beautiful too of course! Queer rep: main character is ace, best (male) friend doesn’t care & doesn’t have a crush on Ellie & it’s very refreshing.

A mystery, set in a fantasy version of our world. This book was all over the place in terms of tone. Sometimes Scooby Doo, sometimes downright scary, and sometimes just teens talking about ice cream and cheerleading - but not in a self-aware, ironic way like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's dialogue-heavy but light on the description. Which is fine, but the tone of the dialogue didn't always match the situation. Because of this unevenness, I could never really sink into the novel. It felt like something was always jostling me out of it. Still, it's an interesting concept. Darcie Little Badger is definitely one to watch.

Very good young adult book. It felt like a middle school read. I forgot the characters were 17, they felt 12/13. Very good story, loved the call out to modern times. Overall good.

I read a few pages and I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, but I was interested by the end of the first chapter and hooked by the end of the second. The story contains a mix of contemporary setting, Native American spirit world, zombies, and magic circling around a murder mystery. I felt I was always being challenged to expand my suspension of disbelief, but the story worked.
This was great! I definitely can relate to the complaints that the 17-year-old characters acted a lot younger, closer to elementary-aged characters and it was hard to relate to their age more that way. This didn't bother me too much, but it's definitely noticable and odd. Otherwise, this world is so grand and alive, the representation is amazing, and the characters wholesome 🥰
