"Every Amazon bears the suffering of her sisters, lives with it, and learns to endure it. It’s why we value mercy so highly.” It was what helped them remember that despite their greater strength, their speed, their skill, the promise of glory was nothing in the face of another’s anguish. .. 'If you cannot bear our pain, you are not fit to carry our strength.'"

I love YA, but I'm always afraid to read YA books because of authors' insistence on romance and forcing two characters together even when it doesn't make any sense. This book is not that; even when it seems like it is, it isn't.

The best parts of this book were the ones focused on Diana. She was wonderful, strong, and just had a really beautiful soul. Of course she was also stubborn and headstrong, but what teenager isn't. Themyscira was amazing. Bardugo's description of it made it feel like I was really there (and I didn't want to leave). But really, I wish the whole book took place on the island. Once Diana left the island, I found myself getting bored. The end picked up, but I had to trudge through the middle to get there. It was worth it though!

While I liked the other characters (especially Nim), Alia was a little boring for me. This was surprising given that the premise for her character is super interesting - a descendant of Helen of Troy who could bring about a war that would destroy everything. If only the book had been written solely from the perspective of Diana, instead of switching between her and the other, likable, but far less interesting characters.

That being said, I loved how great the diversity was in this book (with the exception of Diana who was white). The majority of the main characters are POC's: Alia and Jason are Green/African American, Nim is Indian, and Theo is Brazilian.

Ultimately, this book was basically a YA Percy Jackson. Whether that is good or bad, I am not sure.

“Sisters in battle, I am shield and blade to you. As I breathe, your enemies will know no sanctuary. While I live, your cause is mine.”

I did not expect to like this book. I wanted a graphic novel. I (foolishly) underestimated Leigh Bardugo, who provided a great adventure, escape, and entertainment.

Very nice view on character and war. Surprising twists. Doesn’t follow the comic book or movie, it is it’s own parallel universe

4.5 Omg that last chapter I can’t. I actually can’t.

When my kids were younger, we loved the Marvel and some DC superheroes. But I’ve never wanted to read a superhero book. I tried the tagged book solely a Litsy challenge.  It’s easy to believe an extraordinary author wrote this one. Diana is young and not battle-tested. She innocently and with a big heart saves the Warbringer from drowning near Diana’s island, bringing risk to her own home and the world. So of course now she risks all to try to save the world. I recommend this book to superheroes and thriller lovers. A fantastic book. And while I won’t be rushing to read anymore superhero books I will read more if Bardugo writes them.
