Evelyn Waugh

3.54 AVERAGE

Evelyn is always problematic, and frankly as a human he disgusts me. I have a hard time reading his work and enjoying it. At the same time, the satirical vignette of colonialist Britain and class issues there that lead to this caricature of foreign war correspondent-cum-celebrities is silly, whimsical, and highly enjoyable to read in an afternoon.

Not my favorite author, not even my favorite book from the period, but still fun to get through for its absurdity nevertheless.

It was entertaining, but would be better without the racial slurs.

Very much if its time but still laugh out loud funny. Scathing satire at its best.

Racism aside - very funny, lucid and remarkably relevant.

I love Waugh, I do. I love his biting wit, the quick jokes, and the faint traces of ridiculousness that run through his books, none of which were lacking in Scoop. This was a scathing excursion by a farcical country bumpkin through both journalism and world politics.
