This is a parody of journalism, which I can see. I just couldn't get into the story and the blatant racism was more than I could handle.
There were some laugh out loud moments early in this satire of newspapers and foreign correspondents but it became tedious, it would’ve been more successful for me if half the size or less!
Definitely enjoyed it and would like to read more of Waugh's writings. Can't remember more as I finished underway 5 months ago.

idk that much about evelyn waugh but i feel like this book is him as a book, it was amusing at times and the plot was well-conceived but at the same time it was extremely problematic and british throughout
also i feel like the commentary on journalism (the lengths reporters will go to to get the "scoop," commercial influences on honest journalism, the pressures/merits of journalism as a career) was kind of accurate even in modern day but it also had a very british skew, sort of makes me want to read more books that fictionalize/satirize more contemporary and more global journalistic perspectives
also i found out this is apparently boris johnson's favo(u)rite book which matches up with pretty much everything i know about him

Graphic: Racial slurs, Racism, Xenophobia, Colonisation
The book uses colonialism to make satire of the English ruling class and journalism as a whole, but it doesn’t necessarily rebuke the colonialist attitudes of the day.
