I cannot imagine a more satisfying and sweet and loving sequel to such a beloved story. An almost present day follow up to one my favorite small town stories. I laugh cried through so much of it. What a wonderful experience to discover more to a story I've loved for so long.

The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop // by Fannie Flag

When I first saw this title a few months ago, I jumped at the chance to hear about the Whistle Stop characters again. Later though, I started to dread reading it more and more because I adored Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and was worried that maybe this would not be as good and would ruin my memories of it a little. I am so glad I can now say that I was so wrong to feel that way because I read it all in one day and loved every minute of it!

Now, this is not a book that has a huge buildup or exciting event, fantastic world-building, or would win literary awards for its plot devices. But I don't say that to be rude or take anything away from it. I say that so you don't go into it with the wrong expectations because I definitely think this is for a specific group of readers that just loves this kind of storytelling. This book is slow and steady and so so sweet. I often wonder what happens to characters after the ending of a book and that's really what this book does. These are normal people with normal lives like you and me that struggle with the realities of a changing world.

The set up is very similar to the first book with short chapters, Dot Weems' newsletters, and following many different characters but it is just as charming. We skip back and forth in time constantly following all the main characters from before and I love how slowly, everything seems to fit together. I'm usually not a fan of perfect endings that clean up everything nice and neat, but that approach fit perfectly here. I loved the mix of old and new, rich and poor, good and bad, and everything in between. I'm so glad that I decided to read this after all.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is a cute, fast, sweet novel. It was difficult to get into the story because for the first third of the novel, there is no actual story. It just bounces around from different times in history from the points of view of different people, many of whom we’ve met in Flagg’s earlier books. Then, when it finally resembles an actual narrative, basically nothing happens.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book, which RELEASES OCTOBER 27, 2020.

What an absolute joy. This book was a wonderful escape, and as a fan of the original “Fried Green Tomatoes” (both the book and the movie), I found this a believable continuation of the saga. I listened to the audio book, and smiled most of the way through. While there was one character that didn’t get the “just desserts” I felt she deserved, it didn’t really lessen my enjoyment.

I only experienced Fried Green Tomatoes at Whistle Stop Cafe for the first time this year. While I didn't have several decades to wait for this book it was still deeping satisfying to return to these storylines. Dot quickly catches readers up on who married who, moved where... with the Weems weekly until the town is disbanded and still her annual Christmas card connects the town and its people. It was simply delightful to have it all wrapped up.

The writing style (jumps in timeline mostly) took some getting used to but I really enjoyed this.

It’s the world’s longest epilogue and I’m here for it. Light, sweet, fun, and heartwarming - and a quick read! I loved Fried Green Tomatoes and this was almost as good. Strong recommendation for those looking for a balm for the soul.

As someone who didn't read the book, but watch the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes", I was excited to see a new book was in the works that showed what Buddy has been up to since the end of the first title. After reading this, I now know I must go back and read the original!! This book felt like home. Fannie Flagg hasn't missed a beat, the flow of the storyline, to the complexities of both new and old characters makes it feel like the book was released right alongside the original, and not decades later. This book is a must read for those that want to see their old friends and meet new ones as well.

This book felt like the best parts about coming home.

I smiled the whole time

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is one of my favorite books. The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop was such a wholesome, feel-good sequel that brought me so much joy. I traded off between reading and listening to the audiobook (narrated by Fannie Flagg herself) and truly smiled the whole time. My heart feels so full.
