I loved this story...it was great to revisit Whistle Stop and old "friends"! Having flashbacks into the previous book and then continuing with this generation's characters was fun. I finished the book smiling and to me - that's the sign of a good read!
There is not enough time to tell you how much Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe meant to me and I have longed for a sequel. The thing about these stories is that they are more about the connections people share to a place rather than a traditional story. Fried Green Tomatoes the book was about all the people who felt connected to the Cafe not just the women who owned it (the movie did a great job of focusing on a theme of female friendship but the book is very different). This novel was more about people's connections to Buddy however brief or second-hand but it still has that magical, serendipity feeling to it. I was not disappointed in this long awaited story.

I've only read one other book by Fannie Flagg, and it was not Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which I have never read, so I had no idea that this was a sequel.
That might go a way toward explaining how this story read like a scattering of smaller stories. On the other hand, the book I read, The Whole Town's Talking was also spread over time (longer, actually), with a huge cast in a relatively small book. It, too, relied on the narrative device of small stories stitched together to make a whole.
I enjoyed this book. Flagg makes small town life sound wonderful, so the idea that Whistle Stop has been abandoned to go to seed made me feel for the characters who missed it so badly, even though I was just meeting them. Flagg has a way with getting straight to the emotional core of characters, with feelings we can all resonate with, even if the characters are all pretty much Quirky McQuiryson from Quirky Central.
But I enjoy quirky characters if they aren't unpleasant to be around. And Flagg has a way of making even the less likable ones at least human.
The entire arc was lovely and heartwarming and just the ticket for these stressful days.

Not as good as the first one but still sooooo sweet!!! Yeah I loved it. Some things were a bit unnecessary, like Ruthie meeting a new love interest in the epilogue. And I thought the storyline about the land ownership was a bit too good to be true (there was quite a bit of that throughout the entire book), but oh well. Very cute, good sequel, would recommend 👍🏻
I listened to the audio for this book read by Fannie Flagg herself. I loved it! I enjoyed the original book, I love the movie with perfect casting, and this book just felt like going back home. All the beloved characters came alive again. Finding out where people went after things shutdown and what became of them. Getting a few more stories of the old days. The story focuses mainly on Buddy, Ruth's son, and his daughter. Honestly if you loved the characters from Fried Green Tomatoes read this one. It's a feel good story.
