I absolutely love Fannie Flagg's books. They are the perfect blend of serious and funny. I love that this book reintroduces us to some beloved characters from Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. It's been too long since I read that book for me to remember these characters with in any detail, but this is perfect as a stand-alone book - and now I do want to go back and reread FGT. With so much seriousness going on in the world right now, Fannie Flagg's book hit the spot.

Having read Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café many years ago, I don't easily recall whether it was as twee as this current novel has turned out to be. If not for the simplistic, overloaded nostalgia and carefully G-rated treatment of the characters' lives, dialogue, and internal thoughts and feelings, I would probably rate this 5 stars for its charming voice and narrative. The novel jumps around in time, somewhat randomly, with multiple view-point characters, to tell the loose story of how Buddy, Ruth's son, grows up to be veterinarian, marries happily, and raises a daughter, Ruthie, who ends up widowed early and in need of the same kind of invigorating friendship that Evelyn Couch got from Ninny Threadgoode in Fried Green Tomatoes. She finds that in Evelyn herself, who pays it forward every which way she can, and then some. If you're in need of something lite, sweet, gentle, and upbeat, this could be the balm you need.

I'll be the first to admit Flagg's writing style has never really captured me. I've read Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe because I wanted to see how it compared to the movie. It was good and a nice way to spend a little extra time in the Whistle Stop world but not a personal favorite.

Like it's predecessor, The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop is told in an alternating point of view between a dozen or so characters - some familiar, some new. It seemed like the entries we're far shorter most clocking in between one to four pages. Unfortunately the format leaves the book feeling choppy and unconnected. Time jumps back and forth between characters leaving thin threads of the plot to be picked up and dropped seemingly at random until everything miraculously comes together in a series of manufactured solutions.

Its a nice revisit to beloved characters and places. While it over corrects for the happy ending FGT  didn't get it was still a mostly  pleasant distraction over a cold weekend.

It is so nice to be able to return to Whistle Stop in this sequel to Fannie Flagg’s Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. I adored that first book, and I found this one to be just as endearing. While the first book had more mystery and intrigue, this one is pure nostalgia and charm.

The best thing about this book is the characters. The return of favorites from the first book makes the book nostalgic, while the new characters add another layer of interest to the plot. I loved revisiting Idgie and Bud, but I also fell in love with Bud’s daughter Ruthie and her friend Evelyn.

The plot is a nice mixture of stories from the past involving Idgie and Bud when he was a child and stories of the learnt time involving Ruthie. The narrative switches often from present to past, but I didn’t find it at all confusing. It keeps the plot interesting. There is also a pleasant mix of heartwarming storylines and humorous anecdotes.

I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoyed the first book as well as anyone who likes a nostalgic, light-hearted read. It really touched my heart and gave me positive vibes. Great sequel!

Delightful! In the beginning, I wished that I had read the first book more recently; but, Flagg did a fine job of reminding me of the original characters and story. Flagg narrates the book wonderfully.
