My new favorite from Olivia Dade. I much preferred the storyline and characters of this book than others in the series. Only rated it 4/5 due to the lack of labeling when it came to the time jumps. Otherwise I think this one has a well thought out emotional plot, good spice, funny characters, and interesting setting.

Bumping up because Olivia Dade is doing some incredible stuff in the romance space and deserves a lot more recognition. Probably my least favorite of the Gates of the Gods series this far, but considering how much I loved the first two it's a high bar to clear. Maria and Peter are so well matched and their journey together is done so well. Ultimately, I just didn't think their banter was done as well as it could have and fell a little flat for me.

You know Olivia Dade is going to give you steamy and emotional.  The final act separation felt a lil rushed but understandable given constraints of the novel. Really memorable series and it’s great that they all intersect in interesting ways! Much love to this.

AHHHHHH! Screaming at this perfection! Body positivity, Maria- a main leading lady who speaks about her body and body hair like an absolute boss, Peter with his gentle soul, kind heart and absolutely filthy mouth! This was so good. I couldn't put it down.

I wasn't a fan of the time jumps( but I understand why they were necessary) and I thought Maria was being harsh in her argument about leaving ( but I like how her and Peter resolved that without any of them compromising everything). And then there were cameos by Alex... and the smut. I had a fantastic time.

CW: death of parent, body shaming

I really loved this story. I loved Maria and Peter. I loved that Maria helped the film crew build a family out on the island. I enjoyed that she helped Peter come out of his shell. Watching them become friends on the island was so enjoyable and watching them fall in love was just so lovely. I really enjoyed all the texts, emails, and fan fics that popped up between the chapters. I did like that both Maria and Peter realized that they had to compromise a little at the end. I was glad that they both were able to listen to each other and make those compromises. I loved this story a lot.

Summary:
Maria's a Scandinavian stage actress; Peter's a down-on-his luck, almost burnt out screen actor in LA. After getting off on the wrong foot, they're cast in an ongoing television epic that requires them to work together on an isolated, tiny island for years.

It's a slow burn (sort of), but more of the development is placed on how each character grows through their separate traumas to communicate and come together--especially Peter.

My thoughts:

First: I was beyond excited to see some body inclusivity extended to our leading man, here, as the first two titles in this series featured men with Ken doll physiques. (While couples come in all shapes and sizes, I was still happy to see Dade's inclusion extend to both Maria AND Peter.) The cover is really cute, too!

Dade wrote Maria like the big sister you’ve always wanted. Absolutely loved her, and appreciated her emotional clarity and boundaries and reflection. That self-assessment and adjustment was refreshing to read. I also loved her supportive family. <3

Peter was precious.

While some of the MA content isn’t exactly my thing, for those who prefer, those scenes can be easily skipped or skimmed without disrupting the story (except for the very first page—that was a bit jarring to me personally).

One of the things I love best about Dade’s writing is she really makes you believe the beauty of her characters--internal and external. Maria’s strength was lovely to witness, and Peter’s heart and care for his craft, in roles notable and niche, made me love him. <3

Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for sending me an ARC of this book for review.

“And that’s how solidarity works, Peter. Welcome to unfettered socialism, you utter skitstövel.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Olivia Dade is the queen of pining, longing, banter, and intimacy. Each book is new, thrilling, and swoon-inducing. She also beautifully builds characters who are so realistic and relatable and complex. In Peter, you get a man who has social anxiety due to his strained relationship with his father. In Maria, you have a shining star of a woman who once was a cold, sad child until the right family found her and loved her unconditionally. SHIP WRECKED delivers all those wonderful feelings Dade promises in each book, and weaves together a story that honors her characters. It’s truly masterful.

Maria sneaks out of the hotel room she stayed in the night before without leaving a note with the man asleep in bed. But hours later she sees him again, reading for the part of Cyprian to her Cassia. He’s very unhappy to see her, which is unfortunate—seeing as they’ve just been cast as leading characters on one of the biggest shows in the world. To make matters worse, they’ll have to film on a deserted island for years. At every turn, the question of whether they should give in to their attraction for one another or prioritize their careers arises. But once the show ends, that problem goes away…right?

🌟FAT REP: BOTH MARIA AND PETER ARE FAT YALL!!!!!!!  BOTH OF THEM!!!!! The way Maria and Peter’s bodies are described is FANTASTIC. They’re both big, tall, strong, round, and soft. There are instances of workplace fatphobia in this book, but great representation of advocating for oneself and destigmatizing fat bodies. P.S. Maria doesn’t remove any of her body hair and I love seeing that in a fat character 💛
