This book was not for me. I think the author had talent, but I found the long passages about Krishan and his ex to be draining. Had the book been cut in half and just focused on has grandmother, Rani, and the civil war, it would have been more to my taste.

This book is relatively slow and ponderous, so one you need to be in the mood for. I really enjoyed is pacing and found its descriptiveness really transporting and evocative. It gave me a window into a history and culture I didn't know a lot about and will stay with me. Hard to explain - but it is both simple and incredibly complex and layered all at once. Worth a read.

This is a really difficult book to rate. On the one hand, the long sentences and paragraphs strained my focus during most reading session in a way I've rarely experienced. On the other hand, Arudpragasam's prose is often gorgeous, and the the ideas he touches on--and the beautiful way he articulates them--are interesting and really thought provoking.

I would give it a 3 as a reading experience, but a 5 for the content.
