I really thought this would be a 5 star read for me, but the ending ruined it all. I signed up for a supernatural book, but ended reading about a house that has a leak, a freaking leak. Yeah, okay when they did the inspection the didn't find anything it got me into thinking, but rlly

Sarah Slade is a popular influencer with a bestselling book. She and her husband just bought a murder house- a house rumored to be haunted after a gristly murder took place there. No one wants them to be there, and no one wants to remodel the house. Sarah also begins to hear noises in the night, coming from the attic. Nothing is as it seems, both in the house and with the people who’ve lived there.

Wow, what a wild ride this book was! I love an unreliable narrator, and this one makes you question everything throughout the entire book. You can never be entirely sure who to believe! The setting of the house provides the creepiest backdrop to this story. It’s one you might need to read with the lights on! I really enjoyed the twists and turns, and didn’t predict the ending at all. My only critique was that there were a lot of side characters that didn’t necessarily add much to the plot and could be hard to keep track of. Otherwise, it’s a very unique and suspenseful read!

Thank you to Lisa M. Matlin, Random House- Ballantine, and Netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

NetGalley ARC | TWs for suicide, murder, hurt/sick animals (the cat will be fine; I promise), alcoholism, and more

Oooooh this going to be the perfect fall release just in time for Halloween. If you love evil but lovable kitties, haunted houses, and books filled with untrustworthy and despicable characters, this one is for you.

I especially loved that Sarah buys a murder house to distastefully flip and get social media endorsements for - setting the tone for who she really is. You kinda hate her, but she makes you laugh... and do you really want her to die (the inevitable fate of living in that creepy home) or come out on top?! And if you want her to survive, what does that say about you...

This is a stellar debut novel, and I look forward to more from this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Bantam, for a free advanced copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This was a perfect October read!

The plotline is fairly simple, a social media influencer and therapist with a secret past buys a murder house to renovate. What could possibly go wrong? Sarah Slade buys the infamous Black Wood house, where murder suicide took place. She hopes that it will help her reach a new audience and fix her failing marriage. But when odd things start happening at the house, there is only so much she can stand. She starts finding threatening notes and is convinced that everyone is out to get her. Buckle up for the wild ride!

What I liked: I legitimately did not guess the twist at the end. I had lots of guesses, I was wrong at every turn. I enjoyed the character and the dialogue and internal monologues were hilarious. I devoured it in a day!

What I didn't like: There were parts of the story that felt a little slow, but it was worth it for the end!

One word... Killhouse. That's the word I read and had to have it. I'm a complete
