No one quite writes like Marquez. His distinct style of hyperbole and humor within dramatic stories is refreshing and makes for light reading.
It’s amazing how in such a short novella he gives a great sense of place and is able to develop characters to the amount just needed to feel the emotion at the end.

What a wonderful picture of human experience, daily life, and also interpersonal dynamics in a small town. I loved the rehashing of this murder that rocked a community, especially as we walk through everyone's thoughts & memories. While I didn't find this very captivating, it was a slow-burn that was really enjoyable.

The author masterfully keeps readers hooked, even though the outcome is clear from the very first page.. or even just from the title. His ability to maintain suspense despite this inevitability is pure genius. The narrative follows a mostly linear structure, but in the final ten pages, the tension escalates so intensely that it feels like a heart attack-despite already knowin how the story ends.
J'ai apprécié la représentation des grands thèmes du roman: la religion, le machisme, la fatalité et l'honneur.
L'intrigue est mêlant la plupart du temps, parce que le récit saute d'un moment dans la chronologie à un autre soudainement, mais c'était évidemment par exprès. Le narrateur témoin essaie, lui, de comprendre tout ce qui s'est passé lorsqu'un homme de la communauté, Santiago Nasar, a été tué. Parfois, il n'a pas tous les détails qu'il lui faut pour construire une série détaillée et exacte des événements. C'était assez intéressant.
De plus, ce roman est un excellent exemple de réalisme littéraire.
