Rating it a 5 strictly on the power of the nostalgia factor. I read this book for the first time at the tail end of 2nd grade when I was 8. It was the last library book I checked out that school year and I sped through it in less than 3 days.
I came across this book at a nearby bookstore a few days ago and bought it and another Roald Dahl book, The BFG, because I needed a literary pick-me-up, something that would be the mental equivalent Pedialyte. And it worked. I'm so happy I got to relive the way reading Matilda made me feel almost 25 years ago.

I read this to my fourth grade class every single year and I never get tired of it! The kids are so into it, it’s engaging, and it’s so much fun. This is my favorite children’s book of all time!!

This was an absolute joy to read! I loved it so much and I'm so sad it took me so long to pick it up! My husband made me watch the movie about 5 years ago when he found out I never saw it and I loved it. I'm surprised I didn't pick the book up immediately after. The best part is, I have such a bad memory that I didn't remember much of the movie so I was able to enjoy this story again for the "first" time.
I decided to pick this book up thinking it would be perfect for niece and I can cross it off my 1000 books to read before I die check list but I enjoyed it so much more than I thought possible. This might be my new favorite children's books. ❤️

I loved this book so much. I adored the film growing up. I grew up with it and my nickname was " Matilda " because I was so similar to her.
However, I never usually say I like the film better but I did with this one. The book was great but I feel the film captured the relationships better especially with Miss Honey and Matilda

This was one of my favourite books as a child, and it was a no-brainer to give it five stars, a rating I now reserve for the books I consider "life-changing." However, as an adult, I now have to drop a star. Let me explain.
This book changed my life because it taught me that I could beat the bad grown-ups in my life by becoming smarter than all of them and reading lots of books. This is a good thing to teach children.
It also taught me that when a teacher (or any other adult) discovers how intelligent and special you are, they will rescue you from your terrible life. This is not a good thing to teach children. It makes them very, very vulnerable for reasons that I will not make explicit.
I would still not deny any child the joy of reading this wonderful classic story, but I would be careful to unpack any problematic assumptions they may have made by talking about what they have read, as with any book.
