I would say this was a three star book but I'm giving an extra just for Commander Ambrose, because he is THE COOLEST. More books about Commander Ambrose, that is what the world needs. Ten stars to Commander Ambrose. A+++
Oh yeah the other characters and the plot were cool too I guess.

Not as interesting as the other books in this world. Might just be that I'm losing interest, after multiple trilogies in this world I think I've had enough.
I hate giving this book a 3 star review as I love this author. When I heard she was writing another story with Yelena and Valek I was extremely happy and couldn't wait. The book has two big no-nos for me.
The first no for me was it switches between characters. Chapter one was Yelena, Chapter two Valek, and chapter three Janco and this continues through the rest of the book. Now I loved each of the stories told from the different views but I always find myself skimming to get back to the cliff we were left at the end of the last chapters. This leads me to missing vital storylines.
The second no for me is not having a complete story. Books are meant to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. This book did really well with the first two but it didn't end the story. I read Snyder's Study series and though there were plot points from book one continued into two and three each book had an ending. This book has a lot of unanswered questions that we will have to wait until the new book comes out for answers.
Overall I loved the story that was told in this book I just wish there had been more conclusions of the different plots so I didn't feel like I read half of a book.

LOVED it but when I have I not loved a book Ms Snyder has written. I need the next book NOW!
Reread on 9/29/15

4.5/5, and I was a little slow on the reading this week š
Despite my dislike of multiple-perspective, I liked that we got an inside look on Valekās past. Iām hoping in the future books we get a peek into why Valek has immunity to magic. Also, Iām not sure if Jancoās perspective was totally needed, but...I love Janco so I donāt think I can really complain that much.
Overall, much better than Opalās story in the Glass trilogy. I love Yelenaās character so much, and Iām so glad weāre back in the saddle with her! Even though the going was a little rough with me and reading this book, I canāt wait to pick up the next two!

4.5 / 5 āļø
This was such a good book!!! I loved it. Iām so glad that I loved it. It was so much better than the last 2 books. After poison study the books were going downhill in rating for me. But this book made it get back up there.
First of all I loved how we got to read from not only yelenaās perspective but valek and janco as well. I loved reading and getting to know them better by reading from their POVās. They are such amazing characters and I loved getting inside their heads and seeing how they think.
Janco is absolutely hilarious. I loved his relationship with onora. I ship them together so much.
I loved reading about valek. And I loved how we got to see his backstory. We learnt about his past through flashbacks of his memories. His story is absolutely amazing. And I loved him as a character. What he went through to get where he was. I loved his determination and strive. That whole Heddaās assassin training/school was so intense. I loved how he was able to get revenge for his brothers deaths and was able to assainate the king and all of those involved. I loved how we got to see the start of the whole stone statue carving thing.
Most of all I love valek and yelenaās relationship. It is absolutely goals. I loved how they trust each other. I loved how they put work first but also their love for one another. I love how they male each other stronger and how it isnāt cliche in terms of the male protagonist always coming to the rescue.
The ending was hectic. What a ride. I loved how everything came together. It was amazing. Those twists at the end. WTF is wrong with that commander. I feel like his gonna start being an asshole. That whole thing with Owen still being alive and Ben the asshole. They better sort that shit out ASAP. As well as the whole currae smuggling business. Why is the commander keeping secrets. Like come on man.
I also loved how their was the whole poison element again. I loved how it was talked about more and mentioned in various ways. All those currae, effects of it, the growing of it and others, seeing if they had medicinal properties etc. sleeping potions, the my love poison etc. I loved seeing all that. Iām glad it made a come back especially since the last 2 books swayed away from it.
Low key I donāt mind yelena not having magic
