Shadow Study

Maria V. Snyder

3.5 stars. Despite the off-putting use of modern slang, the switch between first- and third-person POV and obvious need for more rigorous editing, I will always keep coming back for more of this world and its characters.

This was such a great read, loved reading the start of this story arc, knowing where it's going, and yeah, I need to reread more for the first time!

So freaking good! Loved to read this book so much! Loved to have all 3 POV's, and enjoyed to hate them at the same time, because a chapter would end on a mini cliffhanger-and we'd go to where another character was left off! I predicted the one thing, because there were a few hints, and when those hints are there, it usually means that! And I want to see Valek's reaction after the last words Yelena uttered! Can't wait for Night Study, the wait is going to be evil!

I enjoyed revisiting these characters I fell in love with years ago!

Feels unfair to rate this one because...
you do kinda very much need to read the Opal/Glass trilogy in order to really understand what's happening here.

OMG THAT ENDING!

The best one since Poison Study! <3

There is more of a character-focus here, like there was in Poison Study, which seems to be Snyder's strong suit. Loved all the POVs, specifically Yelena. I missed being inside her head. And here, we get more of an insight on Valek and what he went through as a child. Much more depth and character study here opposed to the 2nd and 3rd study books, and the glass books (I liked them all, and liked Opal, but there was very much a focus on action and events instead of character development).

Also, do I like the Commander? I have mixed feelings. He seems like an anarcho-socialist who wants to provide for all people in his country (food and housing, etc), which is awesome! But his oppression of magic users makes me feel.....a bad way. Not sure what to think of him yet. But we get more about about his connection to Valek in this one too.

Just great, honestly.

This series of books is a re read for me every year. I have loved them from the minute I picked them up and will continue to every time I read them. No matter how much I know the story I still feel all that they want you to feel and the characters are brilliant. The world building is fantastic. These books will always pull me out of a slump and 1 a day is not enough.

Rating:4.2*

Snyder did an excellent job, especially coming back to this series after so many years. I'm confident new readers to the series will not be confused. And I actually liked the multiple POV's more than I thought I would, especially the insight on Valek's past. I do wish that Ari had a POV, however. Snyder was being a little devil though, leaving each person's POV with a cliffhanger because she loves to torture her readers so much XD. Liked it overall, though.

SpoilerYELENEA'S PREGNANT???????????????????????

Is Valek going to quit? He needs to quit.

Is Mara V. Snyder going to do a book from their baby's perspective?

I really enjoy this series however this was my least favorite. The author tried to hook you with cliffhanger endings to the chapters however the story didn't hook me like the other three. There was lots of back story to Valek but honestly I just wanted the story to focus on Yelena. The ending was interesting and I hope the author plans to write more!

Short Review: This is a spin off of Poison Study, which i really should have read first. It involves the mc from that. I will get to reading it thou :D the plot is nice and i was very intrigued. I very much can't wait to see how this turns out. Overall, a great book, but i think you need to read Poison Study first.
