I was hesitant to start this, since I wasn't the biggest fan of Addie LaRue. I am pleased to say that this is nothing like that book. It had me hooked from page 1, and I devoured the story. I've been burnt out on superheros lately, so it was nice to follow some villains.

Each character feels unique, but also real. They all have their own personalities, and I found it really easy to fall in love with the ragtag group of found family. I see that this is supposed to be a series, and although I don't really see where it's going to go based on the ending, I definitely wouldn't mind spending more time with these characters.

I did feel that the story was a tad too long. The short chapters definitely helped in mitigating that though. There are quite a few moments of "plot convenience", which is what brings it down to a 4 for me. Those moments really stick out to me, and unfortunately take me out of the story.

Overall, I am just straight up happy with this book, and I'll be thinking about it a lot over the next few days.

I fell in love with Victor as a character, he might have been a little mentally unstable, but he was a likable character. Eli on the other hand, I despised this man so bad I hated seeing his name show up. V.E Schwab did such a great job of marking Eli as the antagonist, considering the fact I hated his guts most of the book. Sydney took some warming up to, even with her being a child at some points I wondered why she was even in the story. It all came together in the end and made sense. Vengeful is definitely on my next to-buy list, this cliffhanger was wild.

Took a quarter off bc of the future dumb angsty conflict that
Victor killed Serena
with Sydney blah blah blah and the pacing which was too off for me at times but other than that this was legitimately fun and absorbing to read. I had a nice time reading really felt like watching a thriller/superhero movie that distacts from the troubles of every day life. It's amusing but grounded too. I enjoyed it a lot after the bumpy start. I'm still kinda lost about the world building tho like I'm not clear on the whole setting situation like the penitentiary and the university and everything is in Merit or where Lockland was maybe it WAS explained but I drifted off. I also didn't get how EO's were already part of this universe's psyche and how the legends about them came to be or whatever but maybe it's explained on the second book idk. But yeah this was cool. VE doesn't wow me with her writing, but she does a hell of a job designing a hard to break away from story.

NOBODY writes villains like VE Schwab. I am traumatized, I am hurt and I will never be the same again. This shook me to my very core. Read for a reminder that life is never eternal, and at the end, we are all…monsters.

A fantastic evolution from YA fantasy to Adult Fantasy!

Little to no focus on romance

We love a morally grey character, but Victor is as grey as they come. Everything is a means to an end and something or someone has value based on how useful they are to him. It’s incredible to watch his mind work.

There’s also some really great ethical questions posed around self-awareness and humanity. Some of the observation were really clever.

And the last chapter was just 😆😆😆❤️❤️❤️ icing on the cake

Please look up the potential triggers for this book. I’ll include a list below that I noticed because I’ll admit I struggled with some of the violence in this

I will be honest. It’s really hard being surprised by death when there’s a character who can revive the dead. There. I said it. Unfortunately I think that really took away from the oh no they’re dead factor because it was established pretty early on in the book, but it’s still there like, “oh no can she not do it this time for some reason”
