I loved the first half and liked the second half. Vargas’ own fascinating life story is the perfect illustration of America’s flawed and uneven treatment of immigrants.

I enjoyed reading Jose’s experiences/perspective on being an undocumented American. I don’t know what’s it’s like to be undocumented, but I know what it’s like to feel like you don’t belong in America or know how to belong. I especially enjoyed his connection to Black art/literature, noting Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, etc., and how they speak to diverse American experiences.

Jose Antonio Vargas tells his story with candor and heart. His memoir offers a unique perspective on living life as an undocumented person in the United States and challenges the true definition of citizenship.
