“There was nowhere to run away from and no need to hurry. My life of deadlines came to a halt, the facts clearly in front of me. The father I never had, or who left me, the mother I left, or who left me. The country I left, which was my home, which I don’t know much about, and the country I am in, which is my home, except it isn’t. It’s dangerous out there, and home should be the place where we feel safe and at peace.
Home is not something I should have to earn.
Humanity is not some box I should have to check.”

Jose Antonio Vargas is a journalist and that really shows in how he reports on his own life. A gay Filipino who entered the country illegally at 12 years old, his story is a must read.

He shines a light on the purgatory that is being undocumented and just how difficult it is, and sometimes even impossible, to become an American citizen. He writes it in a passionate and concise way that shows his experience with and love for journalism. Dear America is at once an educational read and a gripping memoir.

I listened to the audiobook and looked for all kinds of chores to do so I could keep listening. The author narrates his life story as an undocumented American. Beautiful story.

A powerful narrative from an undocumented American who has made his way to the highest ranks of journalism to tell his story about bootstrapped beginnings and never-ending persistence.
