What a perfect read for this season. I saved it specifically to be read this week, as it is New Years themed.

Perhaps my life in and love of nyc has created a bias towards this book, but I assure you that is only the beginning of what is to love about this book.

I fell in love with Lillian Boxfish. I loved being in her head and I keep trying to think of ways I can be more like her.

I can’t wait to learn more about Margaret Fishback.

Also, I meant to add this in the original review but I was too hype on the ending to remember. I love that the acknowledgments were before the story. I think that is such a lovely touch.

emotional funny hopeful inspiring lighthearted reflective sad slow-paced

Wow! This is a book that should be listened to as the narrator is incredible and embodies the character of Lillian like no other story I've ever listened to. I normally listen to books at 1.25 speed but I slowed this down to normal just to absorb the cadence and emotion in the narrator's voice. The story is beautiful with lots of introspection and poetry and I wish I could join Lillian in another walk.

It’s an overall decent read. It might deserve 3.5 stars. The wisdom about working women, sexism, relationships, parenting, and society were often funny and resonant. But I also found a number of scenes bland and didn’t feel guilty about skimming them. I did appreciate the whole story more after reading the author’s note about the real woman who inspired the character.

Overall, I thought this was a really great book. The writing and Lillian’s life keep you involved and always wanting more. However, I felt myself drift a little bit away towards the middle of the book. Lillian‘s grandiosity seem to get to me at times, frustrating me to the point of yelling at her. However, this is who she was and I learned to love it more as time went on. I understood more about Lillian and who she was and why she was not a perfect person. In the end, perfect people don’t make for good books! After finishing the book it felt even better to know that it was loosely based off of a real life person. It was an added bonus to see the city of New York, a place I have always loved, in the light of the past through the eyes of someone else.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Semi biographical, a trip through a quasi fictional feminist's life story and personality, complete with poems from the true life model, perceptions and historical factlets on changing times, and archaic vernacular which only seems over the top at the beginning. A few chapters in and you are hooked on Lillians life, then you don't want to put it down.
