Anywhere You Run is set in 1964 and is the story of two Black sisters who separately flee their Mississippi home for very different reasons. The books focuses mostly on Violet, who has the most to lose if she is found. Hers is a story that starkly highlights the racial realities of the time. Older sister Marigold’s reasons for fleeing will resonate with many women who came of age in the 1960s, irrespective of race. The story is told from three points of view - Violet’s, Marigold’s, and that of a man who is desperate to track them down for reasons of his own. I found the book to be a very readable historical fiction with a good exploration of race, gender and socioeconomic status. It also features a complicated sisterly relationship which I enjoyed, as well as a dash of thrillery vibes which adds some tension. I enjoyed my time with this story and was invested in the sister’s futures, but I doubt that their story will stick with me. It’s not a bad story, more a case of me already being well versed in the themes and time period, and nothing about the story really standing out or grabbing my attention.

Interesting, but sad story. The flow of the story was nice, not too slow and not too rushed and the author handled sensitive themes good. I listened to the audiobook and the POV’s were narrated by different narrators which made it nice to follow. The ending was fitting for the story.
