funny lighthearted relaxing medium-paced

Light entertaining plane read. I'm preparing for my first trip to England. The book was funny in parts, but also somewhat disheartening that as a resident he had so many dreary and failed travel days. Doesn't really instill confidence that I,m going to have a good time. Or a successful trip.

The problem with reading older books and logging them here is they’ll be subject to the Goodreads reviewers of ten years ago and good lord, what a dense and pompous lot they were. I read someone slag this book because Bryson was cranky. Huh? Are you going to complain Shakespeare nailed feelings in a too poetic and insightful way now? Bryson is the Shakespeare of crankiness for Marks & Spencer’s sakes.

Hilarious stuff in this. A little too meandering, but very fun and keenly perceptive.

Two stars seems so harsh, but it stands for "it was ok", and that's exactly what this book was. Bryson, a funny and smart writer, lived and worked in England for many years before moving back to the States and decided to take a trip around Great Britain as a goodbye tour first. This book is the story of that six-week solo trip. What I liked least about the book was that it was SO solitary. He comments on how lovely the British are- all the lining up in queues and utter politeness of them- but doesn't bother to talk to many of them in his journeys. Overall, I was disappointed.

Did not finish

This is the book I was hoping for when I picked up [b:The Anglo Files: A Field Guide to the British|2661003|The Anglo Files A Field Guide to the British|Sarah Lyall|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348846610s/2661003.jpg|2686228]. It's a book-length love letter to Great Britain. It was wonderfully well-written and very fun to read. Bill Bryson is just fun to hang out with. I love his style and his humor. This wasn't as good as actually getting to run around England for six weeks myself, but it was almost the next best thing.

Delightful sense of humor; I started laughing out loud on page 2.

Yet another re-read and loved it all over again. I do enjoy Bryson's writing and this book aLways makes me laugh, feel nostalgia for my birthplace and yet relief that I don't live there still.
funny lighthearted relaxing slow-paced

including an asterisk with this because the audiobook (by bryson!) felt like it was maybe out of order? Like it ended and then just. continued. but I think it had just doubled some of the chapters at the end so idk

but this was nice! relaxing & good for when I couldn’t sleep, feel like it wasn’t quite as funny as some of his others nor as informative as some, so a weird midpoint, but I do just love his ramblin

This book is hilarious! He can give an honest perspective on British life since he lived there for 20 years, but still considers himself an American. Now I really want to go to Great Britain!

This book was great the second time around too. Still made me laugh out loud! :)
