The name of the book caught my attention and I was excited to read it. I read some other reviews and I feel like those were right. The friends, at times, were very harsh and mean to one another. I thought that Celeste’s husband, Wade, was very mean and cruel to her. The ending of the book rubbed me the wrong way. Saying that he left her to get her attention and didn’t really mean to initiate a divorce and for them to get back together wasn’t heartwarming for me. The only relationship that made me feel happy was Toni and Kent and even Yasmeen and Darryl in the end. Overall, it was an okay read. The ending seemed kind of rushed. My happiest moment reading is when Celeste went to therapy for herself

DID NOT FINISH: 46%

A little too much going on in all the characters' personal lives for me to handle at this particular moment. It is well written and I *want* to like it, but it is not for me right this moment.

I really wanted to like this book - four best friends with a motto of "We never miss book club" work toward opening a bookstore together. While I loved all the references to bookish culture (Libby! blankets! cozy reads!), there was just too much other stuff going on.

It's a lot to follow four main characters and I felt the book was driven by numerous outlandish external conflicts at the expense of getting to really know the characters and seeing them experience personal growth.

Things that happened to the characters:
  • carjacking plus hate crime
  • winning the lottery
  • sick child
  • falling for a grifter's scam
  • secret adoption
  • gambling father
  • infertility
  • abortion guilt
  • teenage felony
  • online stalker and blackmailer
  • bad investments

I was looking for a compelling emotional story of friendship and books, and unfortunately this was not it.
