I found the dialogue clunky and the narrator's delivery of some of the slang & jokey bits unconvincing.
For a book that was supposed to be about friends who consider themselves sisters, there were several instances of them being bad friends to each other. Three of the four main characters make poor decisions for the majority of the book, which made it less enjoyable to read.

I felt like some of the character’s story lines were spread too thin so got a little messy keeping track of them but it was enjoyable overall.

this book had me crying, cracking up, and shaking my head!!! i loved every second of it. i even bought a physical copy before i was halfway done with my library loan. that’s how much i enjoyed it!
i noticed a lot of low ratings for this book. many people went in under the impression that it was going to be a cozy read, just for it to turn into a soap opera. others also complained about how toxic the friend group was and how they didn’t need to be involved with each other, let alone open up a bookstore together. i think some of those people failed to read the synopsis, or maybe it went over their heads.
Celeste, Leslie, Yasmeen, & Toni have been friends for a lifetime and get the idea of combining their sisterhood and love of books into a bookstore. in the process of doing so, they all experience things that completely upend their lives, relationships, & friendships. there were many moments where the women would lash out on each other, their loved ones, and innocent bystanders. i saw some readers call them toxic, but when dealing with trauma, denial, and the many other obstacles that break us down as people, we don’t always show up as our best selves. sometimes we find ourselves taking our frustrations out on those who don’t deserve it and that’s just a result of personal negligence. they certainly had their bad moments, but i don’t think that made them bad friends. i actually like that their life experiences were the star of the show vs the focus being mainly on the bookstore. the drama was entertaining, but also real and raw. i’ll take that over fluff any day! on top of everything that went down, i love how they stuck to tradition and made sure they didn’t miss a book club meeting. everything ended up coming full circle and reminded the characters and readers the importance of community and true sisterhood. there’s a lot to take away from this book! this book touched me in more ways than i ever imagined that it would 🥹
