Walking away from your boss’ office (who you were also having an affair with) after you found him dead… what could possibly go wrong?

I really enjoyed it! This was everything I wanted The Other Black Girl to be in its way to explore racism and sexism in corporate America — the only difference being TOBG wasn’t a legal thriller like this one haha.
I enjoyed the writing and how real the characters felt! I especially liked how flawed Ellice was. The timeline set in Ellice’s childhood was my favourite part of this book, a big part of that is probably due to Vera being the character I liked the most. The book was fast paced and the plot twists were all so great, it made my heart race and kept me on the edge of my seat.
The only thing I didn’t like was that it uses a trope I kinda hate : when we know a character went to an Ivy League college, yet they make the stupidest decisions. And I hate it even more when that character’s a lawyer, like in this book haha. Seems a bit like the easy way to create tension. 😅 I also would’ve liked for there to be more legal elements and see them actually doing their job. Ellice kept leaving the office for the entire day without telling anyone, and nobody never told her anything, and I think that was the most unrealistic part of the story lmao 🤧

a few days ago my eyes were in a lot of pain but i wanted to read a thriller, so i checked this out as an audiobook from
my library completely at random, not even reading the description. the themes and concepts touched on in here are extremely compelling. i love a good critique of capitalism and exploration of the way race, trauma, and class interact, though (unlike some of the reviews i’ve seen) i actually wish there was MORE and that it went more in depth.
this didn’t work too well for me as a thriller, tbh. somehow i find it both too slow and too fast paced. it almost felt like there were starts and stops in the tension, and i like more of a slow burn, steady increase in tension, with a lot of access to a character’s psyche. while we got a lot of introspection, the narrative voice still felt pretty distant and ellice never came together as a complete character to me.  i think this is just a case of a concept that is very suited to my taste executed in a way that isn’t.

This book was okay: it had some exciting scenes and interesting side characters, but some of the main character's decisions were just unbelievable
(you're a corporate attorney who hates cops and is actively trying to hide a past murder accusation and you don't lawyer up before you go to the police station?? Girl.)
and it got a bit over the top towards the end. Not a bad debut though. I'm looking forward to seeing more from this author.
