I REALLY wanted to like this book since I  liked the author’s second book “Anywhere You Run” but this was not the same. This book was SO PAINSTAKINGLY SLOW and all of the secrets were revealed in the last 5 chapters?
Then the author tried to tie in this huge underground white supremacy group that was puppet stringing or a part of the wealthy and powerful elite, but there were too many characters and names to keep up with, and it made the reveals pretty confusing as a listener. And on top of that chaos, the security guy that killed her brother Sam???? I don’t even remember the reason why because it was such a lazy, haphazard reason, but I think it was because Sam was simply just someone in the way of the security guard’s master plan of selling guns illegally, through the company, to this white supremacy group. Which in my opinion was so ridiculous
I didn’t DNF the book simply because the flashbacks were of previous characters I read from “Anywhere You Run” but you don’t have to read the books in any kind of order. Also TRIGGER WARNING
The main character has flash backs to child abuse, rape, and abortion.
I might give the author one more try, but if it’s any consolation, “Anywhere You Run” is the second book and was better than the first, so the third book might be solid!

Very dark and intense. I was invested from page 1. This book is a great psychological thriller with lots of plots twists. Yet somehow, also gives social commentary on POC specifically women of color.

This book was full of stress, drama, and trauma. It starts out as a little bit of a murder mystery but gets more convoluted and tense as the plot thickens. Although we know that our main character is flawed and hiding secrets of her own, it was difficult for me to understand why she kept making bad decision after bad decision despite her being a very intelligent and successful lawyer. She doesn't trust anyone (rightfully so) but it was hard to keep up with her after she kept continually lying and digging herself into deeper holes with the people around her and the police investigating her. What happened with her brother made me so sad, and her tragic backstory made me even sadder. The true criminals were unfortunately very realistic and although she did get a hint of revenge at the end, it wasn't truly satisfying to me and I couldn't help but just feel sad and unfulfilled for her and the end of the story.

this was an interesting and engaging thriller although it wasn't fast-paced like it claimed. i would argue the first half was hella slow and then it picked up like mad in the second half. i loved the discussion of race, diversity hiring, representation and corporate culture in America but i think these issues could have been dealt with in an more nuanced manner. Morris could have explained in more detail why exactly Ellice was hiding so much of her past from her friends, colleagues and bosses. There could have been more time spent exploring her childhood rather than going for the shock reveals
of the abuse, murder and various plots
. i think the twists were honestly quite predictable but they all served a proper purpose in the storytelling and plot design. i do agree that for a lawyer who was supposedly intelligent af and brilliant this woman made so many stupid decisions - from simple things like lying to the cops, speaking to police without counsel to literally running from a dead body when there's CCTV and entry logs, etc. this was a page turning murder mystery but it didn't really keep me on my feet that much. i thought her entire relationship with her brother was VERY under explored and would have given her a deeper, more emotional side to help readers connect with her better.
