This was almost a more jaded Kanan than we met in 'Rebels', maybe his time with Hera softened him up by the time that rolled around. It was a fun read and an enjoyable adventure.

Where was the plot? Book 4 of Covid iso was a disappointment

This was fine. It wasn't anything special but it was a blast. Having watched Rebels and loving the Ghost crew, this was insightful. I did always wonder how Hera and Kanan met. I appreciated that this wasn't focused on them falling in love, Instead, it placed their meeting and flourishing respect for one another at the forefront. It's also nice to see what sort of headspace Kanan was in post-Order 66 and pre-Rebellion. The murder of his master, the genocide of his culture and the complete loss of his identity within the galaxy at such a young age would destroy anyone. This helps understand how he is with Ezra later on, that he doesn't feel betrayed, but rather unmoored and closed off.

What a great way to start off the new Canon than with the beloved couple from a great show.

The plot moved along relatively fast. Vidian as an antagonist makes sense, while also showing off Sloane as a good political player helps her character development in the other works. We often forget that the Rebellion started with small acts of defiance by groups under Imperial duress. The short chapters made it easier to move the story along and avoided the boredom of staying with one character for too long - a common problem in other Star Wars novels.

I watched all four seasons of Rebels recently, and Kanan and Hera are my favorite characters. How could they not be? I fell for them so hard.

And this is the story of how they met.

Mind you, I've been terribly spoiled by the quality of fanfiction that's out there for this pairing. And even though Kanan is obviously interested in Hera in this story, this is clearly not following ...those trains of thought. Which is fine, from my understanding of the characters. Kanan still is head over heals for Hera and that's perfect.

The plot was a little.... look. I didn't pay that close of attention to it. It was fine. The Empire is bad, they want to exploit this planet and its moon. The planet at the end is still being exploited but at least they haven't destabilized it. Watch out for cyborgs, though. They'll get ya.

Mostly I was wondering where C1-10P/Chopper was. I love that murder droid.

Couldn't get in to it

I know this came out forever ago but I'm reading it now. This was pure FUN. Everything you expect when reading a Star Wars novel. The pacing reminded me a lot of Master and Apprentice. It took a hot minute for everyone to come together but once they did ugh- wonderful.

I would read 800 pages of Kanan and Hera doing ANYTHING. Taking a cooking class, assembling Ikea furniture, repainting a shed, etc. They're one of the best dynamics in the franchise.

And Sloane was excellent. I can't help but like her. She's not bad to be bad, she's three dimensional, she's driven and at times pretty funny.

This is a great pre-Rebels read. You don't need to have watched it at all to read this. It sets up how Hera and Kanan meet. I especially loved getting a little more info and insight on Kanan/Caleb and Billaba's former relationship as master/Padawan.

Ultimately 10/10 would recommend. It's darker than Rebels but with all the same shenanigans you might expect from these two

Very good plot, fleshed out by some well developed characters.
