Have you ever wondered how Kanan and Hera met? In A New Dawn, a ragtag group comes together to stop Count Vidian, more machine than man now, tasked with increasing the mining yield of his newly appointed territory, the Gorse system. His desperate plans threaten to destroy everything.
Kanan Jarrus is the protagonist. Caleb Dune lost everything after the Great Jedi Purge and has been wandering the galaxy since he was a teenager. Kanan lives by the last message Obi-Wan sent to the Jedi, stay concealed. He wanders aimlessly and struggles to find a challenging job that won’t draw attention. Jedi innately use the force to enhance their abilities and while Kanan transports bombs for mining he has to suppress his skills to avoid distinction. When he meets Hera he is immediately drawn to her beauty and intelligence. He is willing to follow her anywhere. Over the course of the adventure he respects her superior flying skills and her devotion to her cause. He isn’t looking for another cause to join but he wants to follow Hera and enjoys the opportunities he gets around her to be challenged and used his skill set.
Hera comes to Gorse on an information gathering trip. She is going to meet with an informant about Empire surveillance as well as do Recon on the top efficiency officer, Count Vidian. She is fairly young here but far from inexperienced. She sees the evil methods the Empire uses to rule and the devastation in their wake. She rallies the ragtag group to her cause. She likes Kanan but is unwilling to shift her priorities away from her mission. We see her great piloting skills, she is always able to coax a little more out of the ship beyond what anyone thought possible. She is a great Rebel Spy.
Skelly and Zaluna are Gorse citizens that get dragged along for the ride. Skelly is a Clone Wars Veteran with a bad prosthetic hand. He is a bomb expert who sets charges for the mining on Cynda. He’s concerned about the environmental impact of the mining and the negative impact on the moon. He’s desperate for anyone to listen to his warnings to the point that he will stage a demonstration with more chaotic effects than he bargained for. Zaluna is a Sullustan woman who has spent decades working for a surveillance company. They used to watch for consumer preferences but after the Clone Wars they pivoted to watching for public safety. She agrees to deliver a data cube for her work friend but gets a lot more than she bargained for. She believes in her work and the incidents she has helped prevent but grows concerned about how the Empire uses the data.
The plot is fun; it takes a while to build traction as we are introduced to the characters but once the ball gets rolling it is very fun. The action scenes are fun and easy to follow. It is good at building the stakes and keeping tension high.
A New Dawn is a great story to tell us how Kanan and Hera met. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Rebels.
I give this book four stars because it was a great Star Wars story. The plot was fun and it was easy to read.

This is a really great and fun introduction to Kanan and Hera as characters, and to each other. We get to see Kanan really struggle with the line between who he is now, and who he had been -- one that does carry on into Rebels, but you see as he tries SO HARD to put up the barriers. And Hera!! So nice to see her truly in her element before the Ghost Crew.
It's a couple of years after Star Wars: Rebels has ended, and I can honestly say that this just improves the experience.
This book has three things going for it:
Kanan and Hera's introduction. Just seeing how this pair of revolutionaries got together makes me smile.
Rae Sloane's introduction. Reading about our infamous Grand Admiral's first conflict with the rebels was quite funny.
And number three would be the various murders at the hands of a psychotic cyborg.(No it's not Vader)
3.0 stars out of 5.0

The clunky writing doesn't help, but A New Dawn's central plot is just very mundane and uninteresting. Good action sequences help it along, and the Kanan/Hera pairing injects some fun, but the book overall is a bit of a struggle to get through. It suffers from a lot of weak characters, notably the complete moron that is Skelly and a terrible bad guy in the form of Count Vidian (who for some reason I kept imagining as a Dalek).
No purpose or meaning behind any character's decisions or personalities, they are just there along for the ride as the plot hurtles forward. It has an environmental message that gets lost, and lacks any ambition. A big fan of the Rebels TV show might get more out of it, but Kanan here doesn't feel anything like the person he is in that.
It seems to me that by making everything canon from now on, the Star Wars novels are going to be relegated to small stories that can't have any real impact on the universe.

This was a very enjoyable adventure. I've been enjoying the Star Wars: Rebels series and it was great to see how Kannan got his start as a (sort of) rebel. The supporting characters were great as well. I listened to it as an audiobook and the production quality and narrator were amazing.

Overall a decent story. The beginning was a little slow, but around Chapter 30 it sped up. The middle of the book I found myself losing interest at times sadly. I did I like reading about how Kanan and Hera first met. I think this was a perfect way for them to meet.
The other characters were decent. Skelly and Zaluna got better as the novel went along. I did not except them to have such a major role along with Kanan and Hera. Count Vidian was a great character and I enjoyed him a lot. He was a fantastic villain and was very much like this era’s General Grievous. I really enjoyed the entire back story we got on Vidian and how he ended up as a cyborg. It was so interesting!
