I'm not sure I would have enjoyed this book as much if I had actually read it (I listened to the audiobook). It is an interesting survey of issues around the world and the work the Carter Center has done. It's a few years old so a few things have changed (for example, Carter mentions the goal of eliminating Guinea worm, it's been accomplished) but overall I found it very interesting.

Content 5 stars; presentation 2 stars. Jimmy Carter has a great deal of charisma when he gives a speech or an interview, but it does not come across in his reading of this book. I do think it might still be preferable to have it as an audiobook instead of reading it. It came across as a long written report of what he has done since he left office. Dry. A little choppy, lacking in smooth transition (and now about Haiti).

That said, what the man has accomplished post-presidency through the Carter Foundation is truly impressive. It has been said that Jimmy Carter is the best ex-president in history and it is hard to argue otherwise. Overseeing elections to ensure democratic processes are followed. Brokering peace deals. Championing human rights and pushing for the establishment of the International Criminal Court and the Kyoto Accord on Global Warming, both of which the US government does not support. Working to eradicate neglected diseases in developing countries. Improving opportunities for impoverished people in Atlanta and other cities. Championing better access to and less stigma for mental health treatment. Increasing agricultural output in African nations. Funding education for medical workers in developing countries. Advocating for the rights and equality of women around the world. And inspiring the development of anti-malarial bed nets. I learned a lot of things that I didn't know about the needs of many people and places in this world. It was just that I think it could have been presented with a little more pizazz.
