Possibly the best book on parenting I’ve ever read, and I’ve read A LOT of books on parenting. Dr. Becky’s approach is not only effective and evidence-based, it is also totally doable and presented with respect and empathy for how hard it can be for the parent.

I love that Dr. Becky puts a lot of focus on the fact that it’s never too late to make better parenting decisions, that brains are plastic and kids are always learning and so long as you do your best you’ll be fine. I also appreciate that Dr. Becky has an entire chapter dedicated to parental self-care, and in the first half of the book, not included at the end as an afterthought, but as key to successful parenting.

10/10 recommend for all parents.

Have become a massive follower of Dr. Becky. Her podcast is equally as helpful and healing. Highly recommend to any parents wanting clear strategies while learning how to understand so many different challenging situations and behaviors with our kids. In an age of gentle parenting I really appreciated an approach that respects and validates all of our kids emotions while being a sturdy leader with clear boundaries.

if you fundamentally believe everyone, especially your child is good inside and reinforce that message, interactions transform to come from a place of understanding what's causing an otherwise good inside person to behave this way.

5 stars for the concepts, 3 for presentation. This is mostly a personality thing, but Dr Becky’s way of narrating was painfully saccharine to me. I could kind of get past it when she was discussing how to talk to kids, but when she used the same tone for demonstrating how it would sound when reflecting to adults, my thought was “well that sounds insultingly patronizing. I would hate if my spouse spoke to me like that.”
If this also bothers you, I recommend the tictoc/YouTuber mamma cusses. She demonstrates how to use the concepts with a different flair.

I love everything about this book. I've followed Dr. Becky on Instagram for years, and this book was in line with everything she's always said, but expanded upon and placed in easy to follow chapters with the right mix of theory and practical approaches to parenting. The most important impact for me is simply a change in the way I view "bad" behavior and what's really happening underneath. I have no doubt I will continue to reference the book's approaches and scripts for years to come.

Not everything about this approach resonated with me, but I can tell that just having this voice in my head while going throughout my days with my kids made a real difference in how overwhelmed I felt by them.
