This feels like one of the best parenting/relationship books I’ve read. It refocuses on treating your child like a human being with complex emotions but also someone that needs a compass to navigate them. Perhaps more important than the navigation of feelings is just the validation that feels are ok and normal and don’t make you “bad” or wrong. While reading I felt like I understood my wife, my colleagues, my family members, etc. more—which is why I say this isn’t just about parenting…or maybe it’s another reminder that parenting at it’s core is human interaction.

a wonderfully empathetic book that guides parents at any stage through the highlights of a combination of interconnected psychological (IFS) and physiological (nervous system regulation) practices to cope with the behaviors and transform your understanding of your children.  It comes with realistic examples and well timed parental guilt check-ins.  though it may get repetitive if your just reading it through for information as with most good parenting books.

Excellent for any kind of youth caregiver (parent, grandparent, teacher, coach, etc!) You will gain an understanding of yourself and why you might be parenting the way you are. Chapters are related first to parenting principles, then to challenging behaviors in children/teens. The best part is Dr. Becky offers multiple strategies in each chapter to address each behavior. A must-read.

Saw her TedTalk on repairing relationships, started following her on socials and just had to read this book. It is insightful and non judgemental. She has a way of explaining things with examples that just makes sense. Thanks, Dr. Becky!

All parents should read this book! The advice helps parents heal from their own trauma while raising emotionally capable kids. Dr. Becky is my hero. She doesn’t just  give guidance; she gives literal scripts! The best part is that she doesn’t judge and explains why these methods work and acknowledges parents’ humanity with letting us all know it’s never too late to repair and grow.

This book is so compassionate, practical, and encouraging. I wish it had been around when my children were toddlers but I’m still so glad to have read it now when they are heading into the tween years.

I wish I could give this book 6 or 7 stars! I am so thankful for this message and how it has already changed my parenting. As I like to do with self-help books like this, I intentionally read it slowly, taking in just a bit at a time so I could really soak it in. Over the 2-3 months I’ve been working on it, I’ve been focusing on “you’re a good kid having a hard time” and “you can handle this, stay present”, and it’s already helped my kids so much. I realize how much I was unintentionally using shame and guilt to get compliance, and I’ve seen such a difference in how my kids handle their big feelings by learning to say “I’m responsible for my own feelings, and I can handle yours.”

I started with just the audiobook, but I quickly bought my own copy of the book so I could underline and post-it note many sections, and I’m confident I’ll be coming back to this in the months and years to come!

This is a book about parents, not about kids. And that’s what parents need. This book is perfect for parents of toddlers, whose personalities and behavior patterns are just starting to develop. But I gained plenty, even as a parent of upper elementary kids. There are times when her examples and voice felt a little juvenile, but the concepts behind the strategies are what’s important and can be tweaked for older kids.
I had this as an audiobook. Kennedy had an impassioned voice in her delivery as times, especially with her plethora of examples and scenarios. This didn’t totally resonate with me personally, but it could be what helps other listeners feel more connected to the content.
I plan to buy this book and go back through and add my highlights. Im glad this book exists and hope more people read it.
