Alternate history (WW3 between Wes-Dem and Pac-Peo). Time travel. A thrilling narrative.
This is the first book from PK Dick that I read. I enjoyed it, although, sometimes, he wants to show how a great word-smith he is and uses lots of adjectives and invented words.

Dick's occasional attempts to recycle some of his old short stories as the premises for novels could be somewhat hit and miss, but The Penultimate Truth makes good use of expanding on the ideas of the earlier tales it picks out for deeper development. 3 stars, because i liked it. Although the ideas presented bring it to a 3.5
i liked hte idea of a sorta-fake ww3 in order to eliminate all the masses and just have small minority of elites with robots. Seems a bit realistic.
Then precog characters are added. Then time travel is added. ultimately none of that even matters to the central plot. The methamphetamines used to write show quite a bit in this book.
Characters have no arcs at all, everyone is the same at the beginning and at the end. The ending is certainly not what i had expected, but its also too ambiguous. Sure theres indication that a lot of change is ahead, but is it Yancey? Is it someone else?
is Lantano really the villain of the book?

Another PKD book that I love and would easily recommend to first-time readers of the man himself. The elements of world control, economic disparity, identity, etc. are all so familiar to sci-fi fans, but they are familiar because of books like this that laid the foundations. A world under a world? Rich people ruling the poor through propaganda? The triumph of truth? I'm all about it. Recommended to: sci-fan fans (think more Star Trek than Star Wars, but appealing to fans of both), people who like secret worlds/passageways/conspiracy theories
I thought I'd enjoy this book. World War III occurred (and some of it appeared to be fought on Mars), and during that time, most of humanity went underground. The war finished two years later, but people were told by the politicians that the war was still going on and the surface wasn't safe. And this lie just kept on going. And then there was some kind of political intrigue and time travel and that's when I got lost.
When I should the book to my father, the only thing he said was, 'he wrote most of his work high.' Ah, I said. That makes sense. I found the language to be very difficult to follow. I couldn't tell what was up or down, left or right, forwards or backwards. I struggled throughout all of it.
Gah.

If what happens if 2 factions get together to have their own peaceful lands on the top of the Earth and you're forced to live underneath it in a tank.
In the age of alternative facts, this is a good book to read.
