I find myself thinking of this book the way I considered “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates: it comes across as a primer for an outside group looking in. Memoirs are so particular depending on their intended audience, and the intended audience appears to be non-Muslim white cishet people. That’s great! But it’s certainly not the queer manifesto that I had expected due to the title, so it doesn’t feel as deeply profound as I had hoped it would.

I really loved this book. I grew up with a lot of these same stories from a different religious point of view (United Methodist) and I really enjoyed thinking about them in such a life-affirming way, through the lens of Lamya’s queer Muslim life. I think Lamya’s way of living her life with such intention is really admirable and instructive for my own (white American butch duke) life. Also, this is such a page turner. I’m really glad this made it to the top of the to-read pile for Asian Readathon!
