This was a cute, creative, touching origin story! The action moves right along but leaves enough time for the emotional beats of the foster parents, the art studio, the new friendship, etc. The art is warm and vibrant and lively with the perfect touch of cuteness and attitude. I didn't love the ending, just because I didn't want that to be the last word.
Moderate: Bullying, Child abuse, Emotional abuse, Gun violence, Kidnapping, and Violence
Minor: Murder
Comic book fantasy combat violence, foster care system, group home, prison scenes, three off-screen murders (one implied, two started), graffiti, sneaking out/running awaywanderonwards's review

Seriously, these new DC graphic novels for middle grade readers are fantastic! I loved the theme of this one--a girl gets powers from paint. What's cooler than that??
Ashley is such a fun character. She grows in the short story, gaining confidence, a found family, and even a new friend. I really loved that her powers were art based. Such a unique spin, and set in the DC universe, this makes this such a great introduction for younger kids and tweens looking to get into the comics game.
