It is wild to think that Dan Brown, author of such thrillers as [b:The Da Vinci Code|968|The Da Vinci Code (Robert Langdon, #2)|Dan Brown|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1579621267l/968._SY75_.jpg|2982101] wrote not only a wholesome children's book but a collection of poetry, and also HE COMPOSED A SYMPHONY. Ok, calming down, this is a good book and symphony, and my kids love the music and now are interested in hearing other symphonies, and the app is rather magical. Lovely addition to our bedtimes. From a public librarian perspective, I would appreciate an adition of this book that did not require a smart phone. An in-book player would be good.
lighthearted

Children's interactive picture book, told mostly in rhyme.  This is one of those books that defies easy classification-- the words read like poetry, but each animal's verse has a moral at the end.  The illustrations make it seem like a picture book, but it was originally released as a music cassette and has a full orchestral score available (orchestra performances available online, and an app that can play along with the book. Unfortunately there is no self-contained CD or audio player).  On one hand, it would be a great activity for a music class in elementary school-- the various animal poems are accompanied by instrumental pieces.  It could be used to discuss musical elements like tempo and dynamics, or to introduce instruments of the orchestra.  It could even tie into writing by having students write their own animal poem and accompanying moral.  I just felt like the book was trying to do too many things at once, and personally would have preferred having the music contained in the book and not having the morals to finish each verse.

Really cute children's book. The music app is a nice touch as well.

Reviewing as a part of my Fall 2020 kids' books reviews!

This is like a more modern version of Camille Saint-Saëns' [b:The Carnival of the Animals|7819561|The Carnival of the Animals|Jack Prelutsky|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348218015l/7819561._SX50_.jpg|10854700], (but so is Dan Brown's Symphony, in a way)! It's definitely a good way to teach musical concepts like motif, key/tonality, and different styles or textures of music that elicit certain feelings or emotions. The book is filled with cartoonish, funny illustrations of animals and nature, as well as poems for each movement, and little proverbs that go with each animal and their respective lessons. And a secret hidden message, throughout the book.

It would definitely take a while to get through this book and the music, so I guess I would present it to a kid or a classroom page by page, separating for each lesson.
