Had high hopes for this one, but it extremely average and not a lot happened. Hoping to have a better experience with her other books.

If The Bell Jar was written in 2000/2001. This heroine made me wonder if I had been too hard on Sylvia Plath's Esther.

Very dark, but surprisingly funny. I laughed out loud in public several times while listening to the audiobook.

Moshfegh perfectly captures the desire to just step into a new life. The deep self-loathing that makes a person desperate to wake up as a new person.

The desperation of addiction is also written perfectly.
When Riva takes the narrator's pills, the narrator's reaction is extremely accurate to a real addict's. Tearing apart her apartment to find anything, imagining taking the pills to try and satisfy her mind, the willingness to go to any length to get them back, the way that she cannot think of anything else besides her addiction. It's harrowing to read if you've ever experienced addiction yourself or been close to someone who has.

Feels like a contemporary Catcher in the Rye. Similar to J.D. Salinger's novel I found the side characters much more interesting than our main character.

This book was batshit

That being said I had a LOT of fun reading it. I would read if you love problematic female mc's. She was honestly such an adventure to read from. I debated over my rating for this book for such a long time because I honestly had no idea what I was going to rate this. I found that when I finished the book I had no idea what had just happened, I felt disoriented and I was suddenly just done with the book. But I realized that was the intention, so I finally decided on a 4⭐️.
