A good blend of classic horror tropes with modern twists.
I went in with no expectations and was quite pleasantly surprised by the quality of this book. It feels familiar, and would fit well with older horror novels. The pacing is good and there is a nice balance between moments that are unhurriedly tense, and those which are action-packed. The setting of a small village in the English countryside isn’t new for the genre, but the dynamics of the villagers in this particular town are innovative.
By the standards of horror fiction, there was decent characterisation; just enough for us to care if each character dies. The main antagonist was occasionally a little cheesy but overall a decent level of threatening. Also, the investigation into the history of the plague was also quite interesting! Definitely a worthwhile read for horror fans.

This book was well paced with a well-considered message about social issues like corporate landlords, the demonisation of immigrants, and the threat of adaptive illnesses. I enjoyed the reading experience, but for a horror novel found it pretty much devoid of any scares.
While there were some moments of body horror and gore, ultimately I felt very few thrills as I made my way through the book. It was an easy read, but not one that ever made me feel I couldn't read it in the dark.

The book is very very good, particularly the parts about the Serbian family, whom I thought Brogden portrayed with accuracy surprising for a foreign author. The story is great, even if not overly original. The stile is flowy and well-pased. The only reason I gave it 4 not 5 stars is because well, I'd have to spoil but let me just say I'm not a big fan of works where too much is suddenly thrown together in the way of happening.
