Decent book with likable, or at least tolerable, protagonists and a fun European centered horror. Trish was a fun character and relatable to me. While I don’t usually like reading from the perspective or teenagers, Toby was at least pragmatic enough to think outside the box instead of trying to brute force it. Not super original - it followed the beats of a typical “haunting” in many ways - but I appreciate that the author didn’t spend too long on the characters trying to write off their supernatural experiences. All of the characters acknowledged the danger they were in, with believable incredulity, which I liked a lot.

I found myself empathizing with Hester. I really liked her character and I wish we could’ve gotten more of her! For her to be revealed as just a little girl shouldering far too much to handle, I felt like she deserved better. After all, it wasn’t truly her making those decisions; just something else feeding off her anger and taking her shape. Maybe the truth is a little more complex, but I want to think that Hester was justified in her hate. Trish was the only Trustee who didn’t have it coming, honestly.

Nash’s reveal about hiring Green Skull had me seething though! Was very glad Hester gave him what he deserved. Just wish Brogden had written that scene!

have to be honest, this was one of those books that I merely picked up to listen to because it was free, and because GoodReads had pretty good reviews. It was immersive and at times pretty terrifying, combining history with the supernatural and horror. Not my usual go to read but it certainly captured (and scared) me!
