I would give the book 5 stars based on the prose alone, but the unbearable bleakness of it knocks it down. It is a savage critique of religion and marriage, definitively cementing Hardy as a writer decades ahead of his time.
Tom Waits once said he likes beautiful melodies to tell him sad things, and that sums up Hardy’s writing. It also contained one of the most shocking scenes I’ve ever read in a book.

A great novel both accurately depicts the human condition and gives insight upon it. Jude the Obscure is a great novel.

Technically I didn't read this book. I listened to the Obscure podcast reading of it with accompanying narrative from Michael Ian Black and friends.

Gripping throughout, but not like a thriller, unless you count the struggle to stay human in the face of oppression as a mystery we're constantly faced with

Sue bridehead is my least favorite character in all of literature.
