One of Hardy's best in my opinion. Love his dark and cynical view of the world. Won't give any spoilers but Holy Crap!!!! 10 out of 10

As a note, I am using a different edition of this book that I found at Powells. I had been thinking of reading some Hardy for a long time, and I'm a little ashamed to admit that I chose Jude because of the awesome hardcover edition I found with a sweet psychedelic 1960's illustration on the front. It's the Harper Perennial Classic edition of 1966.
This is the first Thomas Hardy I have ever read. I am sad that it took me this long to read him because I am absolutely loving this novel. Though completely depressing and frustrating at times, the writing is excellent. I am looking forward to reading more of Hardy's magnificent writing.
This book proves such a satisfying read because it gives the reader so much to think about. Although some of the situations the story's main characters struggle with might now seem unimportant to today's readers, there's still something radical about Hardy's passages on marriage as an emotional, spiritual and legal commitment. I also find the passages regarding Jude's class, academic, "religious" struggles to be particularly raw and honest, and therefore a little shocking. Additionally, this book has given me so much to think about in regards to women and femininity during the time when this story takes place. Sue's struggles in particular surprised me and have left me wondering about a great deal.
I'm not yet to the end, but I am somewhat aware of what may be ahead (the awesome illustration on the cover of my book kind of gives it away, dangit). I'm a little anxious of the emotional storm ahead.

"Judas, o Obscuro" foi o meu segundo livro de Thomas Hardy, apesar de ser o seu último, depois do excelente "Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented" (1891), e fez-me, ao virar da última página, ir de imediato encomendar o resto dos livros do autor. Hardy apresenta duas enormes qualidades, uma escrita erudita mas acessível, ao que junta um naturalismo digno de Zola. Ao contrário de Dickens, e restantes victorianos, aqui não existem finais felizes, aqui existe toda uma exploração da natureza das relações humanas, em que as variáveis se vão cambiando numa espécie de experimentação de condições com consequências tanto naturais como sociais. Hardy não se coíbe de colocar em cena aquilo que ninguém quer ler, e que faria com que este livro fosse na altura imensamente atacado, para nos obrigar a enfrentar a dura realidade dos modelos sociais que criamos, no caso o victoriano.

ДЖУД НЕПРИМІТНИЙ або як мене обманом примусили 400+ сторінок прочитати
Про часи, про людей та про повсякденність та всюдичасовість людської ницості.
В одного з моїх улюблених видавництв, а саме у Фабули, є зовсім коротенька серія «Заборонена класика», з якої в мене є весь набір книг (той, що українською), але прочитана тільки половина з них. Від першого роману «Санін» Михайла Арцибашева я була на сьомому небі від читацького щастя, і хотіла б те саме сказати про «Джуда», але.
Але комусь спало на думку у синопсисі (це та коротенька цидулка, що ми її зазвичай читаємо перед тим, як купити книгу) вказати, що у романі мова йде про важкість життя молодого чоловіка, який оженився на дивній двостатевій (!) істоті, але щастя так і не зазнав. Погодьтеся – у історії вже досить інтригуючий початок.
400+ сторінок я чесно чекала, коли ж нарешті буде той самий дивний, двостатевий. Я читала, читала, читала… Безумовно, книга була цікавою (інакше б я просто закинула її як подалі). Але жодної дивної двостатевості так і не з’явилося аж до самої останньої сторінки.
А була просто тяжка історія про життя та любов двох молодих людей, про їх важкий шлях один до одного, про зради від близьких та непростий, заплутаний і так і не знайдений ними шлях до Бога. Про втрати – фізичні та моральні, втрату себе і про страшну трагедію, до якої призвели по суті, дикі умовності соціума тих часів, про які йдеться у романі (Томас Гарді видав роман у 1895 році і описував тогочасне сьогодення Британії). Про норови та звичаї провінційної Англії та про буденність зла людського характеру.
Насправді, страшна у своїй неминучості трагічного книга.
Звісно, через 120 років після створення роману звісно багато речей, які були надважливими для молодих людей тих часів, сприймаються відверто смішно, але скільки болю та нещастя принесли тогочасні забобони вони приносили тоді!
Загальний висновок – достойна та цікава книга, якісний переклад українською. Та і взагалі, Гарді визнаний у світі романіст та поет, тому на якість прози дорікати не прийдеться. От як би ж то я ще не чекала того, чого у його романі нема.
