Jude the Obscure

Thomas Hardy

3.7 AVERAGE

I like Hardy’s prose but talk about depressing! And I can’t ever get on board with cousin romances. Plus both Sue and Arabella were awful people and Jude deserves so much better! Poor lad!

This is one of my favorite Thomas Hardy books. The tale is stark and cold-feeling. I describe this book as feeling like winter.

Reading Sue’s regression at the end of the novel was absolutely heartbreaking, she was a women teetering on the edge of freedom with her radical ideas. To see the way she punishes herself, returning to a miserable marriage because of what happens to her children was so sad. The scene where she throws herself into her Children’s graves begging to see them one last time completely devastated me.
TLDR- this book was so good but so sad and awful

I read this for my U.C. Berkeley TA-ship. I've read (and loved) other works by Hardy, such as Tess and his poetry, but Jude is vying for my favorite.

Reading this was like having toxic sludge poured into my brain.

Somewhat longwinded and slow, this text discusses religion, education and morality.
