Not my favorite book ever a little too slow for my pace and the characters were hard to enjoy (I know that’s part of what the author intended) but still makes it hard to read. The whole depiction and idea of California is still relatable today

I hadn't heard of this book before so didn't really have any expectations. West's story is corrupted, incoherent and emotional at times, and a really great example of how unlikeable characters can form a good book. It feels like a classic, but I honestly feel like I need time to sit with the story and process what I read.

I think this is the first time I heard about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Scary but amazing.

I enjoyed the prose but the thoughts and actions of the characters made me uncomfortable. Which was probably the point. The story just kinda ends. Reads like a period piece but it wasn't written as one, so that's fun

This was a book that was better written than it was. As a plot? It’s about a guy in Hollywood who wants to get laid, so he mopes around this selfish jerk of a woman.
Turns out that other losers have the same idea. One of them is, I kid you not, named Homer Simpson. None of them are very likable.
There’s a cockfight, a couple of drunken revels, a studio spectacular gone awry, and a crushing mob. At the end, the protagonist does not get the girl.
Nice writing, but I’ve read better by Cain and Chandler.

This was hardly a book. It read more like a series of vignettes where things happen to unlikable people than a cohesive plot, really. It was easy to read, pleasant enough to get through, but nobody was likable enough for me to really want to root for them. It was just like I was passing through an airport in literary form or something.
