Wow. That’s all I’ve got.

dark emotional mysterious reflective medium-paced

Kept me on the edge of my seat! Plenty of twists and turns and red herrings, so I never was quite sure what the ending would be. And I was certainly surprised. It also discusses important topics like power dynamics and abuse within women’s healthcare, the impact of trauma on family members, and child abuse.

I wish there had been some closure with Dr. Feingold, even though Shelby had died. I would have liked to see what might’ve happened to him. I also wish there was more about Bea after the accident, even just a chapter from her at the end. The novel clearly establishes that Bea destroyed so many people’s lives and cared more about herself than others, but I would’ve liked to have her POV as a person with their back against the wall. We can look at Bea and condemn her for the horrific choices she made, but at the same time, people are very complex. Obviously, her main motivation was avoiding jail. But what else went through her mind when she made these choices? Was she a person acting irrationally in a time of crisis, was she a cold-blooded murderer, was she something in between? It’s obvious Bea cared for the family, so how does she go from babysitting the kids to keeping one locked in her attic for 11 years to save her own skin? I just would’ve liked more development of Bea’s character. Overall, good story for sure!

This is not a profound piece of literature and it’s certainly not realistic in the slightest, but it was entertaining. I skimmed through some of the writing I would consider fluff or laziness, but overall the story kept me engaged and I enjoyed reading it. If you can suspend disbelief and immerse yourself in an easy thriller novel, you’ll like this. If you like to poke holes in plots or hate somewhat fluffy writing, you will not. It’s an easy beach read and that’s all.

mysterious

I have very mixed emotions about this one. Three timelines, three narrators, three big reveals. In every case, some of them worked better than others.

It was well-plotted. Two of the reveals really got to me. Far-fetched, sure, but made enough narrative sense to both satisfy me and really creep me out.

The writing style was extremely not for me though. I think the abrupt sentence structure was meant to build tension, but it sort of just felt like it was written for middle schoolers. I’m glad I stuck around for the ending, but it wasn’t a particularly engrossing journey.
