I know this is stupid, but I have a general dislike of books we read in German class. This being said, I *can* be won over if the book is as wonderful as The Sorrows of Young Werther - and this one wasn't. It had some interesting technical aspects, but I hated the rest of it. It feels like Grass is always looking over your shoulder, whispering into your ear: "I'm so much ahead of you stupid readers". And that I can't stand.

DNF. 2nd attempt at this one, 2nd failure. I didn't get what it wanted to be... I mean I get the farce, but beyond that, I just didn't get what it was saying. I had to skip back constantly because I kept zoning out. Ultimately I just didn't care what was being told.

A novel about the sinking of the passenger ship Wilhelm Gustloff transporting refugees. It was attahed by a soviet submarine in January 1945 with nearly 9000 people dying.... i think it lost something in the translation from German.

Another book I had to read for school and surprisingly I really liked it. I've read it twice already, once for normal lessons and then again for my a-level exams because I chose this as my topic in German.
It's an interesting book about real events that made it even more interesting to me. Of course it took me a bit to great through this book the first time but that's how it always is with school books.
I had to do lots of stupid tasks at school that were about this book but I still enjoyed the story very much and also found it interesting to see what the Internet can do to some people.

Well, if GoodReads won't give us half stars they certainly won't give us quarter stars. But a conflicted me wants to rate this 3.25? A novel that mostly struggled to capture my interest outright, but seemed to lull on easy enough ended with the type of book I would've hoped this to be! It only took 6 of the 9 chapters to get there! But reflecting on the book in its entirety I really enjoyed it. An unforeseen, modern sequel to the Danzig Trilogy, this book surprisingly brings back Tulla Pokreifke as a grandmother who has taken her anti-semitic grandson under her wing but told from the perspective of the father struggling to reckon with the infamous story of his birth. Günter Grass never disappoints when searching for a book that wrestles with the reality and affects of Germany's troubled past.
