Re-read of my favorite book. A MASTERPIECE!
It felt so bad to close the book again, I will never be over it. This book’s portrayal of love, imperfect relationships, shame and passion take my breathe away. Tolstoy has my heart, since sentence number one I was hit, his way of characterization, storytelling and exploring so many themes, the dramatics and the insights he gives on 19th century Russia’s social-political environment amazed me. And Anna is such a relatable character, her turmoils, how she hates herself as much as loves herself and never letting on on her true intentions or emotions, also finding all the foreshadowing for her on this second read had me screaming. I also felt that her story began in contrast to Levin’s and then ended up paralleling somehow, and bet Tolstoy was living through Levin’s philosophical debates with himself, having made him in his likeness, so of course he ending up being as much of a main character as Anna.
Anna Karenina will always be one of my favorite fallen women of literature along with Madame Bovary. Anyways, the end of part 7 now on this reread having caught up on all the foreshadowing leading up to it will haunt me forever, so I’ll proceed to live throughout my post-book depression.
‘Tolstoy's life has been devoted to replacing the method of violence for removing tyranny or securing reform by the method of nonresistance to evil. He would meet hatred expressed in violence by love expressed in selfsuffering.’ - Mahatma Ghandi

I listened to this on my phone over the last three months- what a joy! I LOVED this story and am a huge fan of Tolstoy (even prior to this) because of his short stories.
